Opening night film premiere and launch party

Our opening night double bill features two debut films from British directors: the first, a short produced by Anthony himself with Caroline Harvey (attending) that launched the film career of close friend Sam Taylor-Wood and the second, a feature by island resident Bruce Webb. Both films celebrate the exuberance of youth and take a refreshingly honest look at sexual discovery and the loss of innocence.

Love You More

2008. Starring Harry Treadaway, Andrea Risebourough.
Directed by Sam Taylor-Wood. 18 min. Warning! Contains scenes of a graphic sexual nature.

A short story about adolescent passions, from boys to The Buzzcocks. Love You More is directed by award-winning artist Sam Taylor-Wood and written by Oscar nominee Patrick Marber (Closer, Notes on a Scandal). The film received nominations for a BAFTA as well as the Palme d'Or, and went on to be awarded Best Short Film at the British Independent Film Awards and Short Filmmaking Award - Honourable Mention at Sundance Film Festival 2009

WHAT IF IT'S RAINING?

1986. Starring Michael Maloney, Deborah Findlay.
Directed by Stephen Whittaker. Digital. 3 x 50 min.

You can trace Anthony's preoccupation with the challenges of contemporary urban life and splintered relationships in this three-part drama for Channel 4, which in some ways anticipates many of the themes developed in Breaking and Entering, 20 years later. The story, told with Anthony's hallmark compassion and humour, follows the emotional and sometimes harrowing journey of a young father coming to terms with the pain of divorce and separation from his child.

Directed by Jon Amiel

From an early Russian folk tale. An evil king sets out to kill a 'luck child', the seventh son of a seventh son, whom it is prophesied will one day be king. But luck is with the child and against the king, and he ends up becoming his son in law and heir to the throne instead. Now the king has just one more card to play: in order for 'Lucky' to earn the hand of the princess in marriage, he must bring back the golden feather from the Griffin's back and venture to the creature's island - a place from where no one has yet returned…

There is a king, his dead wife, and his three daughters. Two are as ugly and as bad as can be, but the third, Sapsorrow, is as kind and as beautiful as her sisters are not. There is a ring belonging to the dead Queen, and a royal tradition that states that the girl whose finger fits the ring will become Queen. When Princess Sapsorrow slips on her dead mother's ring for safekeeping, the King finds out and must marry her according to the law. The princess goes into hiding, disguised as a dirty, ragged thing, and sets to work in another castle where she falls for a handsome prince. Now if only he can see her beauty beneath her Scraggletag appearance…

Play

Beckett on Film was a unique project, through which some of the world's most talented directors and actors were invited to film all 19 of Samuel Beckett's plays. Eyes Down Looking

Live reading with by Dexter Fletcher and David Threlfall.

This original radio play by Anthony from 2006 is another homage to Beckett, of whom he once said: "The sense of language and poetry in his writing has been the single biggest influence on me as a writer." Similarly influential were his life-long collaborations with the actors he loved, including Juliet Stevenson and David Threlfall who featured in the original recording. David Threlfall joins us now to lead a live reading of the play.
